The Morningstar RatingTM for funds, or "star rating", is calculated for managed products (including mutual funds, variable annuity and variable life subaccounts, exchange-traded funds, closed-end funds, and separate accounts) with at least a three-year history. Exchange-traded funds and open-ended mutual funds are considered a single population for comparative purposes. It is calculated based on a Morningstar Risk-Adjusted Return measure that accounts for variation in a managed product's monthly excess performance, placing more emphasis on downward variations and rewarding consistent performance. The top 10% of products in each product category receive 5 stars, the next 22.5% receive 4 stars, the next 35% receive 3 stars, the next 22.5% receive 2 stars, and the bottom 10% receive 1 star. The Overall Morningstar Rating for a managed product is derived from a weighted average of the performance figures associated with its three-, five-, and 10-year (if applicable) Morningstar Rating metrics. The weights are: 100% three-year rating for 36-59 months of total returns, 60% five-year rating/40% three-year rating for 60-119 months of total returns, and 50% 10-year rating/30% five-year rating/20% three-year rating for 120 or more months of total returns. While the 10-year overall star rating formula seems to give the most weight to the 10-year period, the most recent three-year period actually has the greatest impact because it is included in all three rating periods.

[00:00:14.15] JUSTIN CHRISTOFEL: In today’s fast-paced markets, having a solid strategy is key. Hi, I’m Justin Christofel, co-head of Income investing here at BlackRock.
[00:00:22.26] ALEX SHINGLER: And I’m Alex Shingler, also co-head of Income investing. Balancing the tradeoff between yield and risk is a challenge. Higher yields may look attractive on the surface but may carry greater risk and potential loss than investors appreciate. On the other hand, lower yielding, higher quality exposures may seem like the safe bet, but will they meet your longer-term objectives? The BlackRock Multi-Asset Income Fund focuses on these tradeoffs and is designed to serve as a core holding seeking to provide investors with a steady stream of income and total return potential with a risk profile that is similar to or below that of a balanced portfolio.
[00:00:59.26] JUSTIN CHRISTOFEL: In order to deliver on these outcomes, our experienced team analyzes economic trends, global events, and market data to identify opportunities and risks. We then build a diversified portfolio using a variety of asset classes – stocks, bonds, and non-traditional income sources, such as covered call writing, securitized debt, real estate, and infrastructure. But it’s not just about having a broad opportunity set; it’s about adaptability. Our team actively manages the fund, adjusting allocations based on shifts in the market and economic backdrop. This dynamic approach allows us to stay nimble and seize potential income and return opportunities while managing downside risks.
[00:01:43.28] ALEX SHINGLER: One of the biggest advantages of working at BlackRock is having access to asset class specialists across the globe who are integrated into our investment process. We partner with over a dozen teams, from the Americas to London to Asia, who provide valuable insights into their respective markets and select the individual securities that make their way into the portfolio.
[00:02:05.24] JUSTIN CHRISTOFEL: In addition, BlackRock’s proprietary risk and trading platform, Aladdin®, enables us to view portfolio exposures through multiple analytical lenses, while our collaboration with the Risk and Quantitative Analysis team provides an additional layer of risk management resources, such as stress and scenario testing capabilities that are invaluable when markets get choppy.
[00:02:28.26] ALEX SHINGLER: So how does a fund like Multi-Asset Income fit within a broader portfolio? For those in retirement with a distribution goal, the fund can serve as a diversified one-stop shop. And for those who may still be accumulating assets, reinvesting income or cash flow can provide an additional long-term return source that is not as dependent on the direction of the stock market.
[00:02:49.16] JUSTIN CHRISTOFEL: Our team has a long track record of managing multi asset income-oriented portfolios. Whether you’re planning for retirement, striving for consistent current income, or simply seeking to diversify and grow your investments, the BlackRock Multi-Asset Income Fund offers a solution tailored to your investment goals.
