Mark Wiedman, Senior Managing Director, is head of the Global Client Business, and a member of the Global Executive Committee.

Mark is responsible for BlackRock’s $11 trillion in BlackRock’s commercial relationships, partnerships, and joint ventures across financial institutions and investors worldwide, and for capital formation across private markets, iShares, active and index strategies, and whole portfolio mandates.

Since 2019, he has sponsored BlackRock’s build-out in the transition to a low carbon economy, growing sustainable investments from $107 billion to $1 trillion. He led the creation of Decarbonization Partners, a growth equity joint venture with Temasek, with a first fund of $1.4 billion. Mark hosts a podcast where he interviews CEOs and senior investors on the energy transition.

From 2011 to 2019, he was Global Head of iShares and Index Investments and drove its growth from $500 billion to $1.7 trillion and recapture of the #1 position in the U.S. and globally. He also brought the ETF and index operations together into a single platform, including algorithmic automation of BlackRock’s $7.5 trillion index book.

He joined the firm in 2004 to help start Financial Markets Advisory, leading BlackRock’s emergency assistance to governments and financial institutions during the financial crisis. Mark also led BlackRock's 2008 creation of Penny Mac, now the #2 U.S. mortgage bank, and served on its board 2008-2019.

Mark sponsored BlackRock’s SOMOS (Latino & Allies) Network, Out & Allies Network and the Women’s Accelerator program.

Before joining BlackRock, he was Senior Advisor to the Under Secretary for Domestic Finance at the U.S. Treasury.

He serves on the boards of Decarbonization Partners, the National Committee for U.S.-China Relations, and Focusing Capital on the Long-Term (FCLT).

Mark earned an AB degree, Phi Beta Kappa, magna cum laude, in Social Studies from Harvard College in 1992, and a JD degree from Yale Law School in 1996. He has taught courses in finance and law at Yale Law and Renmin University in Beijing.
